Maximum Defence ~ Minimum Effort ~ Compassionately Humane

Nyingbulam Karatedo-Jujitsu is not just a martial art system. Ask anyone who has taken it long enough they will quickly tell you that it is a way of life. This is because it not only teaches you how to defend one self but also how to do it and live with a mindfulness aspect.

The art of Nyingbulam was formulated and founded by Shihan Jason Carter (Nyingje Norbu). It came to be after he spent years training in different martial and non-martial arts. At the time of creation he was a 3rd degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, 3rd degree Black Belt in Seishindo Jujitsu and as well had training in Black Dragon Kung Fu and Judo. It was original taught under the name of Jiyu Yoshikido (FreeStyle Way) at K&D Martial Art Centres in Ontario, Canada. But after finally forming a formal syllabus and belt rank system the name was changed by Soke Norbu to “Nyingbulam” just before it was recognized as an officially recognize and sanctioned combat art by several different international organizations.

Nyingbulam’s martial aspect was developed specifically for personal self-defense. It combines controlling standing/ground joint locks and pressure point manipulation with powerful throws, hand strikes and kicks. Its martial System Breakdown is 50 % Shotokan, 25 % Japanese Jujitsu (Hakkoryu JuJutsu, Nihon Goshin Jutsu & Pressure Points) and 25 % Modern Jujitsu (Freestyle Jujitsu, Shootfighting & Brazilian). But with this comes the knowledge and understanding of when, how and how much to use in a given situation. Together it forms the basis of one of the worlds most affective personal protection systems.

Within this martial system we use several training tools some traditional and some more modern. There are four Kata’s or forms taught from white belt through to Shodan (1st degree black belt). Being traditional aspect of the arts the first Kata (watching the sun rise) is done entirely on the ground. It contains many locks, takedowns and strikes done entirely from the sitting and laying positions. The art also teaches two weapons/training tools. The first one taught is the Obi (belt), it is used for controlling, locking, throwing & Chocking techniques. This is a weapon for the modern day because a large number of the population wears either a belt of scarf on there person and they are not classified as a restricted weapon as with most martial arts weapons. The second one is the Short Sticks. These are taught not from a weapon point of view but more importantly how to proper strike pressure points and to increase hand speed and multi hand simultaneous movements.

Mindfulness training is also an important part of Nyingbulam. The practitioner is taught a variety of mind and focus training exercises from sitting and walking meditation to Chi Gong training. We also highly promote and teach universal respect and compassion for all, even our adversary. This is done through different types of training drills and the teaching of Nyingbulam’s four rules of defense and as well as the five steps of aggression and there appropriate responses.

The 4 rules of Nyingbulam

1. We will defend ourselves in any needed position, from any position (upright or ground) by using a variety of holds, locks, pressure points and strikes.
2. The amount of defending aggression is directly proportional to the amount of the attackers aggression.
3. We use our Nyingbulam training and assess every situation for the best and most compassionate/humane course of responsive action.
4. We then only use enough force necessary to stop or numify the attack – while using the most compassionate/ humane means possible.
