My name is Wing-Sheung Lee. My friends call me “Jerry”, and my family calls me Wing-Sheung. I was born in Hong Kong in the late 70s. I came to the United State at the age of 13. My first home in the US was Brooklyn, NY, where I finish my junior high school. I graduated from High school in Massachusetts. Later, I graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology with a BS degree in Computer Science.
Many people think that when you came from Hong Kong or Mainland China, you got to know some martial art skills. Well, it is not true. Indeed, there are a lot of great martial artists and martial art schools. However, since Hong Kong is a modern city, martial arts weren’t widely popular. Most families want their kids focus on education. Therefore, besides watching Kung Fu movies, I have never encountered any true martial artist. At that time, martial arts were a big cloud that I can only watch from far away, but never able to touch or feel it. Ironically, when I was young, my father always told me many great stories about my grandfather’s martial art skills. Apparently, my grandfather was one of the three great martial artists in the village. However, since he was afraid of his children use martial arts to create trouble, he never passes his skills to any of his children. My father never encourages me to study martial arts. The more they kept me away from martial arts, I became more curious. Study martial arts became one of my dreams.
My doorway to martial arts was my friend Quoc Nguyen. I met him from a friend of mine in a paintball game during my college years. We soon became close friends. He mentioned to me that he was studying a martial art called Tinh Vo Dao “The Way of Smart Fighting Arts” and the master is Sifu Quoc Tran. I wasn’t going to let the opportunity go. Therefore, I joined Tran’s Combat Martial Arts. I started training seriously with Sifu Tran in 2001. I like his style because it allows students to open their mind to different disciplines. There is no limitation. This is my fifth year with Sifu Tran. Although, there was time that I was away, I always come back and train with Sifu Tran. My current rank is 2nd degree black belt. I plan to continue my training with Sifu Quoc Tran and continue my journey in martial arts.
