Modern San Da/San Shou: Chinese Freestyle Stand up and Throws

In recent years, we have seen a rise in the combative sport of San Da/ San shou. This system of fighting is not only brutally effective, but it also extremely exciting to watch. From its smashing sidekicks and scissors takedowns to its high kicks and high altitude throws, San Da is becoming the choice of many serious fighters.

This style of fighting slightly resembles the extremely effective art of Muay Thai. It contains in it devastating leg kicks, crushing knees, lightning fast punches, and about every throw and take down that man could imagine. One of the things that are most effective about San Da is its ability to put a person on the back from the clinch. It also contains a wide variety of catches so that a fighter can counter attack. With all of these effective skills, how could this style not be a great compliment to the fighting style of MMA? One of the most difficult transitions is from striking to clinch. The beauty of this system is that it is based on just that. By using strikes in such a manner that you could move in, clinch, and put the opponent on their back. What better way to enter into a ground and pound or ground fighting position than to use San da? A crushing throw to the ground or canvas can easily determine where a fight can go and from what position you could have.

The beauty of this system of fighting is that it can blend with any current system and not take away from it. Take the average Karate or Tae kwon do fighter. They Concentrate on their striking and such, but imagine if they added straight forward no nonsense clinching and throws. That would elevate their fighting without destroying their systems core theories. It will only be an addition that will help them dig deeper into their system to find either weaknesses or neglected practices. The grappler can benefit because he can now learn how to achieve the clinch without being hit and taking on excessive punishment. This will blend with any system that promotes open mindedness. I urge anyone who is looking to add effective techniques to their current system to explore this great fighting system.
