He joined the Japanese army during World War II with hopes of being a fighter pilot, but because of racism in the army, he was abandoned by them and ended up on the street. After he was dismissed by the army, he tried to stop organized crime and occupying American servicemen harassing young Japanese women. He witnessed the murder of his master and decided to train in the wilderness for two years. During the two years of training, he trained his body in the art of karate. He lived through a tough time in the training and returned to challenge every karate schools in Japan. He eventually became a legend in Japan.
This film showed the honor and the pride of being a martial artist and a human being. The film maker did an excellent job on transforming Yang Dong Guen which had no martial arts training to a very believable martial art master. The spirit of a martial artist could be seen on every challenges. There was a very little computer graphic nor wired actions. The choreography was excellent. Every fight sequence was as real as it looked. Although the film is quit long and dragged at the middle of it, it sure is one of must have DVD for your collection if you are a serious martial art movie fan.
